Traveling by plane is the fastest way to your destination, but spending time at airports can be time-consuming and costly. Airports are also spacious and almost always filled with people, so it is no surprise they hold some secrets. Here are some of the most interesting tidbits about airports and valuable things you probably never heard.
Airports increase income by investing in comfort
Many airports look cozy with carpeted areas, natural light, and lower ceilings. These costly additions are not there to make passengers feel better about their flights. If passengers are relaxed, they are up to 10 percent more likely to go shopping. More and more airports look like mini-cities, with fancy restaurants, boutiques, and more, and the passengers are willing to open their wallets to enjoy the experience.
Lost airline luggage
One would think that all lost and found items that never reach their owners are destroyed. However, many of these items go on sale after up to three months. Many scammers advertise lost luggage for small prices, but only one facility in Alabama is known to be reasonably reliable, and scoring a great deal is not hard.
Transportation costs
Travel expert Megan Gougeon shared in her YouTube video some of the best-kept secrets never told to passengers, and one of them includes overpriced transportation. Cabs and other transportation options often come with hidden fees, so the same destination would cost you around 20 percent less if you weren’t on your way from the airport.
How do we avoid these costs?
Gougeon said that all you have to do is change your pick location one block to avoid these extra fees if you’re using a ride-share app. You can also use the airport shuttle free of charge. Airport shuttles are not only free, but they can get you closer to your destination, so you can pick up a cab, share a ride app, or use public transportation to get to where you want.
The arrival vs. departure
It is suggested that you use arrival and departure lanes, but what if you get stuck in traffic? Departures tend to be more overcrowded in the morning, Gougeon said, and since fewer flights are arriving, go on an escalator to the departures. It is a significant time saver and works both ways.
Airport ATMs are your friends
Airport currency exchanges commonly don’t have the best rates. For the best rates, try a local bank or a bank ATM. Before you do, ensure your US bank offers foreign ATM fee refunds for using a foreign ATM. In the best-case scenario, consider ordering foreign currency before you fly.
Borrowing from Lost and Found
If you lose or forget your charger, you can likely borrow it from Lost and Found. Most passengers buy new chargers, but this can be a useful hack if you already have an extra charger waiting for you at your destination.
Where to get food?
Many airports created massive and often overpriced food courts. The prices are around 15 percent higher than at the same place outside the airport. It might sound weird, but airplane food is often cheaper than airport food. This is particularly true if you own an airplane credit card with discounts.
Hidden gems
Airports can be stressful, with long lines and crowded spaces. Airport lounges are easy to miss for a reason. If you are chilling, you are not shopping. Depending on your ticket, you may get a cheaper or even a free meal and WiFi. Lounges are not free but come with perks, making them ideal if you want to catch up on your work or relax with your friends.
Best seats are not always what they seem
Airports also found another way to inspire passengers to spend their money. The best chairs are usually placed closest to the shops, and the idea is to tempt you into buying something. Charging stations or water are also placed near shops or eateries for the same reason.
Additional commodities
Some airports have chapels, others offer free massage chairs, and a few even have yoga rooms, theaters, and much more. It is all about getting informed, especially if you’re stuck at an airport for a while and want to avoid spending money in shops.
Restrooms dilemma
Going to the restroom before the security checkpoint might be a better solution since these are known to be less crowded and even cleaner. After finishing, stack up on free TSA-approved clear liquid bags. These stations are often positioned right before the security check.
TSA PreCheck might be worth it
If you’re a US resident who frequently flies, applying for TSA PreCheck could provide you with fast passage through airport security and fewer annoyances. Many credit card companies offer great deals for this service, and you should check it out since, according to the TSA website, some TSA PreCheck members spent an average of five minutes in airport security in February 2023.
Bring a bottle
Most airports have water fountains where you can fill up your bottle. Since you cannot bring liquid, you can save money by carrying a water bottle.
Somebody is watching you
US airports take security seriously. In addition to TSA scanners, they employ trained profilers who observe everyone’s behavior. If they detect anything suspicious, they may request further questioning. This is a necessary precaution for your safety, so don’t be alarmed if you feel like you’re being watched.
